Alewijnse Refits Patrol Vessels

rpa-14_small1Alewijnse Marine Systems recently received a double order by De Haas Yards in Maassluis, the Netherlands, for a complete refit of two patrol vessels for the Port of Rotterdam Authority. For both the RPA 14 and the seagoing patrol vessel RPA 15 most elements of the electrical installation will be renewed, including the automation of the fire fighting systems. With these projects Alewijnse states her expertise as system integrator for the refit market. The refit concerns a modification of almost 75% of the electrical system, including the cabling. Alewijnse will take care of supervision on site and provide engineering, installation and delivery of amongst others the alarm, monitoring and control system, lighting installation, navigation equipment and wheelhouse, distribution systems and automation of the fire detection installation.

DNV IMO-Approved Sewage Plant

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has just IMO-approved the biological sewage treatment plant from Gertsen & Olufsen (G&O), a leading Scandinavian developer of sewage treatment systems targeted for ships and offshore use. The revised guidelines on treatment of black water, IMO MECP 159(55) Resolution, come into effect on 1 January 2010. As the resolution entails new and significantly stricter standards, it represents a massive challenge to shipbuilders and designers. The guidelines apply to sewage treatment plants on ships of 400 GRT and above as well as on smaller ships certified to carry a crew of more than 15.

Keppel FELS ‘Best of Show

Keppel FELS Limited has been awarded ‘Best of Show’ in the annual Intergraph Golden Valve Awards Competition for the company’s detailed view of a semi-submersible drilling tender created with SmartMarine 3D design software. The Golden Valve Awards competition is sponsored by Intergraph and is open to all SmartPlant and SmartMarine Enterprise engineering design software users. The winners were announced in Washington, D.C. at Intergraph 2009, the engineering and geospatial software leader’s annual international user’s conference. Keppel FELS’ submission won over the more than 80 entries in this year’s competition.

Jumbo Jubilee

On June 8 the protocol of delivery and acceptance was signed between Jumbo Shipping and Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania. This means Jumbo is now the proud owner of the Jumbo Jubilee. Following final outfitting and voyage preparation the vessel left Galati at the end of the same week. As the Jumbo Jubilee is the fourth J1800-class vessel, her first destination is the quayside at Huisman Equipment in Schiedam, the Netherlands, to get her two 900t mast cranes installed.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service, is pleased to announce that TBW Alliance, comprising Teekay Shipping Limited and BW Fleet Management, has renewed their core products contract with the company for the next two years, with an option to extend for a third year. The contract is worth an estimated US$ 4.5 million per year. Wilhelmsen Ships Service will supply chemicals, refrigerants, gases, and welding products as well as consumables. The company will be supplying all vessels in the TBW Alliance, which include approximately 250 vessels from Teekay Shipping Limited, BW Offshore and BW Fleet Management.

First Freefall Drop

Leading lifeboat and davit manufacturer Schat-Harding has completed the first freefall drop with its new design of lifeboat for the offshore sector, the FF1200 which, according to the manufacturer, sets new standards for freefall boats. Schat-Harding CEO Ove Roessland: ”We were acutely aware that, in order to satisfy regulations applying to the Norwegian offshore sector, it was necessary to design a completely new lifeboat. Now, after several years of research and development, and the successful completion of high-scale module testing, we have produced what we regard as the safest lifeboat ever developed by Schat-Harding.”

Wave Piercing Offshore Design

Wave piercing technology is a well-proven concept for high-speed catamarans and trimarans. Now, Rolls-Royce is bringing the benefits of this to the offshore market, with the new UT 790 CD vessel design. Rolls-Royce Chief Design Manager - Offshore Svein Kleven said: “With the UT 790 CD, we can support offshore exploration and production further and deeper while at the same time improving safety and minimizing the impact on the environment.”

Wärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading ship power system integrator, is to combine all its ship design units into a single entity, to be known as Wärtsilä Ship Design. The units involved in this re-organization include the naval architect companies Vik-Sandvik of Norway, Conan Wu & Associates (CWA) of Singapore, and SCHIFFKO of Germany, as well as the company’s conceptual ship design unit in Finland. The new set up will generate a variety of new designs, from simple, low-cost, standard vessels to more high-end, ground-breaking tonnage. Wärtsilä, with a broad and high quality offering of ship design services, expects to increase its share of the ship design market, with the main focus being on a full design scope approach.

Major Grundfos Pump Order

Grundfos A/S has received an order from Zhejiang Yangfan Shipyard in China to deliver 126 pumps for six 9,500 dwt multi-purpose cargo vessels for Clipper in Denmark to be delivered in 2009 and 2010. This USD 675.000 Grundfos order is the first ever placed by a shipyard, signifying a major step forward into the marine market for Grundfos A/S. Grundfos pumps are known for their high efficiency, which, in this case, was one of the major selling points. Furthermore, Grundfos efficient worldwide spare part support and its global organization were other important aspects for the order. This great leap forward to bring Grundfos’ highly power-efficient pumps to the marine market will contribute to lower emissions and hence greener ships.

This will be the 62nd office in the Radio Holland Global Network and the 12th office in the USA. Radio Holland Oakland will provide sales and service of marine electronics in the entire Bay Area on the US West Coast. The Golden Gate Region receives over 3800 vessel arrivals per year including Container, Bulk, Tanker, Vehicle Carrier, and Passenger vessels. There is a very strong yacht, ferry and fishing presence in the area as well.
