obamastratton_webOn Friday 23 July, First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama christened the US Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, a vessel that was detail designed and production engineered by Northrop Grumman using ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software. The ship is named in honour of Dorothy Constance Stratton, the first female commissioned officer in Coast Guard history and director of the Women’s Reserve during World War II. (more…)

  • Oil Rigs Delivered in Record Time

    lamprelljackup_webOnly 13 months after initiating training for new 3D CAD/CAM software, Lamprell Energy launched the LT-116E Jack-up Rig. The entire project was completed in only 18 months. Other shipyards have achieved large gains in productivity as well. This is noteworthy in the current economic climate with the constant pressure to reduce costs. In a paper delivered at the International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding (ICCAS) held in Shanghai, Dr Oskar Lee explains how these shipyards have managed to achieve such impressive results. (SSI), in conjunction with two universities, eight shipyards and five design firms, has created comprehensive college-level materials for the instruction of modern shipbuilding, design and modeling. These educational resources have been developed in direct response to the stated needs of the shipbuilding industry and are designed to take students with a basic understanding of AutoCAD and provide them with the practical skills and essential knowledge needed to become modelers in a shipyard or marine design agency. Included are lessons exposing learners to marine materials, classification societies, safety issues, shipbuilding terminology, fabrication strategies, shipyard production drawings and the principles of Design for Production (DFP).
